NEW YEAR, NEW CAREER?

December 31, 2016

Happy New Year! What is your resolution for this year? Often times we find ourselves making resolutions to a healthier lifestyle, focusing on weight loss or more exercise. But what about your mental health, your emotional health? Happiness with your career plays a huge role in both, but how do we achieve that happiness?

As you know by now, I recently went through a career change to find that happiness. After all, the grass is always greener on the other side, right? Well… not always. When I first started in my new position, I felt so lost. I started to second-guess my decisions. This change was uncomfortable, and I was beginning to miss my comfort zone.

I quickly remembered why I opted for my career change in the first place, and in no time I found myself accepting this new, scary change. I knew that I had to push through my comfort zone and make this new career my own. Only then was I able to thrive.

After I got through my (quick) adjustment period, I was able to focus on what great things I could do for my new organization, my new career. I am proud to say that within the first 6 weeks of employment I was able to implement the beginning stages of a local employee recognition program. Since the launch of my “Brag Board” (more info on that to come soon, for all you HR professionals, managers, etc. out there) I have gotten nothing but positive responses back from my employees. Although the level of morale may not be apparent now, I know that a boost is coming!

So, you may be wondering what I am getting at here… take a leap and jump outside of your comfort zone. Start a new project that will impact your organization – or a new career, if that is what makes you happy! Take the steps toward a healthier YOU!

I challenge you to step back and take a look at your career situation. Are you happy? What can you do to increase your learning opportunities, all while helping the organization and yourself grow? Start a new program within your organization, create an initiative, offer to help with current efforts in any way you can. It is important to establish yourself and find your place… after all, that leads to true career happiness.

In this new year, make it your resolution to find career happiness. Even if that means stepping outside of your comfort zone. Eventually you will find your place and do great things!
